The project

Cabin warmth, layered with surprise.

The Cabin is a full renovation of a private retreat in Alba, Texas — a project that started with an honest brief from our client: keep the soul, update everything else. The original log walls and rough beams stayed. Almost everything else didn’t.

The main kitchen leans into moody restraint — matte black counters, deep-toned cabinets, a vintage brass spring faucet, and open wood shelving stacked with collected glassware and copper. The great room opens onto a stone fireplace anchored by a full bear mount and layered with leather, velvet, and vintage finds. Every piece looks like it’s been there for a generation — which is exactly what our client wanted.

The private spaces earn their quiet. The primary bath centers on a copper soaking tub against original wood walls. Bedrooms layer textile and texture. The game room upstairs leans into the cabin’s character — ping pong, vintage skis, a reclaimed fish-and-game-club sign — a space that invites evenings that stretch long.

The bunkhouse is where the project gets playful. Blush cabinets, a retro blue fridge, white stone counters, and black hardware turn what could have been a purely functional guest space into a room people want to sit in. A checkerboard-floored bathroom tucks in behind. Every room earns its place.

Our client gave us room to push the character of the cabin forward while honoring its original bones. That balance — moody and layered, but never heavy — is what The Cabin became.
